Inspirational new awards

By Donna O’Toole

New to 2022, we want to shine a light on a highly valuable awards initiative: The Great British Business Heroes Awards.

The Great British Business Heroes awards have a desire to recognise and reward those who are making hugely positive differences and contributions to support others to succeed in what is an increasingly worrying economic climate.

The Great British Business Heroes Awards

The initiative will celebrate businesses and individuals who are making life easier for small businesses and entrepreneurs and driving their future growth.

Are you a business hero?

After surviving the devastation that COVID-19 caused, businesses are now facing an energy crisis and a looming recession, making life increasingly difficult for those who work so incredibly hard to keep their business afloat.

What we have seen in this complex time, is businesses and individuals stepping forward to ease the struggle with amazing strategies and support systems; so despite not necessarily being able to resolve all the issues that small businesses and entrepreneurs face – they do their part to make life more comfortable. Are you one of these heroes?

The Great British Business Heroes awards has a range of impressive categories to celebrate businesses that go above and beyond:

  • Accountancy Provider of The Year
  • Legal Support Provider of The Year
  • University of The Year
  • Accelerator and Incubator of The Year
  • Business Banking Provider of The Year
  • Business Growth Initiative of The Year
  • Business Podcast of The Year (In Support of Small Businesses)
  • Business Support Team of The Year
  • Communications Provider of The Year
  • Corporate Venturing of The Year
  • Digital Initiative of The Year
  • Digital Transformation Support of The Year
  • Diversity and Inclusion Initiative of The Year
  • Financial Product Provider of The Year

  • HR Provider of The Year
  • Investment Platform of the Year
  • Investor of The Year

  • Small Business Membership Organisation or Club of The Year
  • Technology Provider of The Year
  • Unsung Hero of The Year
  • Workspace of The Year
  • Young Business Support of The Year
  • Zero Carbon Support of The Year

With 5.5 million small businesses in the UK, making up to 99.9% of the business population in 2021, it is imperative that there is support, and that those providing it get the recognition they deserve.

If you’re a UK business that has done your part to help businesses in need, then this new award is the perfect opportunity to recognise your team and your impact so that you can help more people and keep being a business hero!

The Great British Business Heroes awards are currently open with the closing date for applications set for Friday 18 November and the shortlist announcement set for just over a week later. Judging for the event will happen from December through to February 2023, finishing with the exciting award Finals in March 2023.

If you are interested in getting involved but feel you would like some support to raise your chances of success, we are here to help you. Dressing for an Awards Ceremony

By Donna O’Toole

Are you off to an awards ceremony over the next few weeks?
Is it your first time at an awards event?
Are you planning what to wear on the big night?

Fear not… we’re here to ensure you rock up feeling confident on your big night. Follow our helpful tips and you might even steal the show!

TAKING TO THE STAGE
If you get the opportunity to either present or collect an award this is your moment to shine, enjoy every second and don’t be afraid to bring your personality and make that moment work for you!

EVENT TYPE
What you should wear is heavily dictated by the type of event, and all of this information should feature on the invitation.

DRESS CODE
Some of the most common dress codes you’ll see on an event invitation are listed here – but nowadays we’re pleased to see a lot more freedom, creativity and self expression celebrated even at the most formal ceremonies. It’s also a wonderful time to share your traditional cultural dress codes too, so don’t let an awards invitation or dress code put you off sharing the outfits that are special to you.

Business: This is often the code for a daytime event with awards presentations, wear what you would feel comfortable wearing to work or to another business event.

Cocktail: The traditional cocktail wear is dresses just above or below the knee, and suits, but not necessarily jackets and ties.

Formal: Longer length gowns and dresses or a complete suit with a tie.

Black Tie: Black Tie tends to be the most very formal dress code, but either cocktail length or full-length dresses, jumpsuits or complete tuxedos are welcomed.

What to wear to an awards ceremony

ACCESSORIES
Most awards events give you the opportunity to party at the end of the night, so don’t be afraid to take a pair of comfy shoes to dance the night away. A lot of networking and business is also conducted at awards nights, so think about creating a digital business card with a QR code so you can quickly connect and keep in touch. Other than that just have your phone at the ready for some fabulous event selfies and team pictures, these can be hugely valuable to share your success on social and with your team.

INDUSTRY TYPE
Dress code can also vary according to the type of industry that the event is being held for. For example, at media and creative awards nights (such as design awards), there’s often a more relaxed or alternative take on evening wear. It can even be a night to showcase your flair and newest designs. On the other hand, if you are attending an awards night for a corporate company, a more traditional environment may lead to a more traditional dress code. Entrepreneur awards give you a great chance to show off your personal brand through your style choice if that’s your thing, or to stay traditional, whatever feels best for you.

Ultimately, the most important thing is you can be you and just focus on celebrating with your colleagues on your big night out!

Shannon Amos: My Career Journey

By Shannon Amos

I started my journey at August Recognition in 2017 as Operations Assistant. During the first few months of my role I was immersed into the world of awards – from observing Donna conducting client strategy meetings to attending my first black-tie awards ceremony events. I was given the opportunity to experience all parts of the awards journey and thereby learn through being actively involved.

Shannon at Wembley Stadium

After gaining industry knowledge during my first 12-18 months – combined with increased confidence – I was able to specialise and shape my role to fit what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go. I’d expressed an interest in wanting to move into a Marketing position, so with excellent guidance and collaboration with Donna, I moved into a Marketing & Communications Executive role.

I was able to choose what training I needed to fulfil my new role, and was supported completely as I navigated through my new responsibilities. The great thing about working for a growing small business is you never stay still for long – priorities change, processes change and roles need to be adapted – it’s exciting, challenging, but definitely never boring!

Team at Goodwood

By 2020, we’d grown to a point where we needed more hands on deck, and we subsequently reviewed my role. This showed where tasks could be moved around and how my role could grow further as personnel increased. It was at this time I reflected on my skills, what I enjoyed and what the business needed, and realised my strengths were more aligned with operations. I was then able to establish myself in a new Operations Manager position, becoming the Digital Lead for the business – this has involved assessing and creating new digital assets and tools to drive growth and accelerate scalability as we work with organisations all over the world to win awards.

Celebrating Shannon's 5th anniversary

From Operations Assistant, to Marketing & Communications, to Operations Manager and now Operations Manager & Digital Lead – all in the space of five years. August Recognition has allowed me to hone my skills, adapt my role, and given me responsibility and accountability, with the added bonus of incredible experiences including attending events at Wembley Stadium, The Shard, and The Grosvenor House Hotel.

If you’re someone who likes variety, likes to be challenged and wants to work within a supportive team environment where the work we do takes clients on a really positive and exciting journey, August Recognition is the place for you – you’ll never know where your career may take you!
