The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise

By Donna O’Toole

The 2022 Queen’s Awards for Enterprise winners have been announced!

On the occasion of Her Majesty The Queen’s 96th Birthday, 232 outstanding UK businesses have been given the royal stamp of approval and received the world’s most prestigious business award.

Many congratulations to all the winners across the four categories:

  • 141 International Trade winners
  • 51 Innovation winners
  • 9 Promoting Opportunity (through social mobility) winners
  • 31 Sustainable Development winners

This year’s winners include West Sussex-based World of Books, who were awarded both the Queen’s Award for International Trade and Sustainable Development. An online book retailer with customers in 175 countries, they sell 12 million used books each year. What’s more, they support 4,400 UK charity shops through the purchase of surplus stock, as well as recycling books and other media that cannot be reused.

4 Mental Health – an organisation in Conwy that provides mental health training courses and free self-help resources – was awarded a Queen’s Award for International Trade, after seeing overseas training increase considerably from 2018 to 2021, to a point where it now represents nearly half of all their activity.

Pearson Engineering also saw a huge rise in overseas activity between the same three-year period – especially in the USA, Canada and South Korea. As a provider of equipment to the Armed Forces, their work ensures that armoured vehicles can become more capable when on the battlefield.

A social enterprise that delivers workshops to teach sustainable reuse and repair skills was recognised for the work they’ve done in reducing pollution and emissions. The Edinburgh Remakery received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development.

The Queen’s Awards are designed to recognise only the most exceptional businesses in the UK. Each and every winner will have met the robust criteria and proved their worth. This is a remarkable achievement at any time – but especially in these challenging times – and it is fantastic to be able to celebrate British business strength and resilience.

Winners are permitted to fly The Queen’s Awards flag at their main office and use the emblem on their marketing materials. They are also given a Grant of Appointment (an official certificate) and a commemorative crystal trophy. Awards are valid for a five-year period.

Benefits of Winning The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise

Every year on The Queen’s Birthday, the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise award winners are announced.

Each winner will have had their own motivation for entering; recognition for an innovative product or service, to differentiate themselves from their competitors, recognition for their exporting success or simply for the prestige.

No matter the motivation for entering, every winner comes away knowing they are one of the best businesses in the UK.

WINNERS PERKS

Not only do you receive an invitation to Buckingham Palace, the Lord Lieutenant of your County will visit your office as a representative of The Queen. The representative will award the company with a Grant of Appointment and commemorative crystal bowl with the winner’s emblem.

This is a really fantastic opportunity to get all of your employees, stakeholders, family and friends involved for a real celebration and to be part of the presentation ceremony. You can also invite local journalists and photographers to document the event and get some valuable news coverage and PR, letting everyone know of your success!

For the five years following the win, all winners are granted the use of the official Queen’s Awards for Enterprise winners emblem. The emblem represents prestige, notable achievement and is recognised globally. It’s a fantastic asset to use on your website, email signature, marketing materials and packaging.

Businesses who enter and unfortunately don’t win can still find the experience of entering beneficial. Unsuccessful entrants receive feedback, providing targets to work towards and outlining where they may need to focus to be successful next time around. This feedback isn’t just beneficial for re-entering but is often sound business advice to take forward and improve.

GROWING SUCCESS

Winners of The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise have reported improvements across the business;

  • 77% of winners have reported increased commercial value for the business
  • 73% of winning businesses have seen employee engagement increase
  • 73% of winners benefited from additional press coverage in local, national and industry press
  • 57% of International Trade winners received increased recognition from overseas

Most importantly, 85% of winners have said winning The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise have met or exceeded their expectations.

Like most awards, it’s how you respond and utilise a win that can determine how much success you achieve off the back of the win.

An award like The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise needs to be shouted about. It is a huge achievement and is a fantastic tool to win new customers, clients, contracts, stakeholders and for recruitment. It is also a great statement to say to your existing contacts ‘The Queen has recognised us as one of the best businesses in the UK!’

THE QUEEN’S AWARDS FOR ENTERPRISE

React. Adapt. Adopt: How awards are responding to the global crisis

Industry Insights

By Donna O’Toole

Having been on full lockdown for over a month, the awards and events industry have had to react, adapt, and adopt in response to the current Coronavirus crisis.

Back in March, we shared how the awards industry is being affected, and we told you that ‘the show must go on.’ And that is still true.

Award organisers around the world are utilising online entry platforms, video judging sessions, and live streaming their awards ceremonies so that you can still win the awards you deserve.

Because at the end of the day, the value of winning awards is in the recognition you receive and what you do with that new power. The winner’s logo is just the start!

Here’s how just a few of our top industry awards have reacted to the crisis and the opportunities this gives you to get involved and recognise your own business’s ability to React. Adapt. Adopt.

EUROPEAN CONTACT CENTRE & CUSTOMER SERVICE AWARDS

Just one of the awards making a change is the European Contact Centre and Customer Service Awards (ECCCSA).

During this time, getting your customer service right has never been more important, or more challenging. Your customers will remember how you treated them during this time and that will play a huge role in whether they stick with you or not!

The ECCCSAs is one of the longest-running and largest awards programmes in the customer contact industry. The awards recognise organisations across Europe that are leading the way in delivering exceptional service to customers.

Chair of the Judges Ann-Marie Stagg has introduced new categories so that you can thank those teams that have gone above and beyond to respond quickly to the coronavirus outbreak;

  • Best Homeworking Programme
  • Responding to a Crisis – Supporting Colleagues
  • Responding to a Crisis – Supporting Customers
  • Responding to a Crisis – Providing Leadership
  • Responding to a Crisis – Supporting the Community
  • Responding in a Crisis – Best Partnership Solution

LLOYDS BANK NATIONAL BUSINESS AWARDS

The Lloyds Bank National Business Awards are considered THE business award to win in the UK.

With backing from Lloyds Bank and other fantastic partners including Elite Business, SME Guidance for Business Growth and Institute of Export & International Trade. Plus media partners including The i, Yorkshire Post and The Scotsman, the National Business Awards continuously support their entrants.

This year they are continuing as normal, with judging scheduled for September and their awards ceremony taking place in November. But as a special thank you, they will be adding an extra special tribute to the heroic work of the NHS during the crisis.

Awards Director Sarah Austin said;

OTHER RESPONSES

Some of the other things award organisers are doing is extending their submission deadline. They understand people are collaborating on entries remotely causing delays, people are furloughed and writing award entries may not be a priority right now (or it might be the perfect time!).

But they still want to see those entries and make sure the companies that deserve to win, have a chance to get their entries in!

Awards International who run the Digital Experience Awards and UK Business Awards amongst others have taken their full process online for some of their awards. They’ve also added the ‘Awards International Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Heroes’ award, for finalists to nominate their colleagues or suppliers who have gone above and beyond to contribute to their organisation during the crisis.

WINNING AWARDS IN 2020

There is no doubt that awards this year will be different, and the recognition they bring is more valuable than ever for motivating your people and strengthening your brand.

If you don’t enter this year, you will miss out on a whole year of recognition for the success you have already achieved in 2019. Awards look back not forward – they want to see results, evidence and case studies of what you have achieved until now – so don’t give up on all that because of the current storm.

We are all in this together, and awards programmes over the coming months and years will reflect this time period and shine a light on those who persevered, showed resilience. and had the strength to help others and themselves.

We are still open and working to support the best businesses to win the awards they deserve. Get in touch today to book your free consultation and we can discuss how awards will help you grow in 2020 and beyond.
