People often ask us why they haven't won the awards that they've entered.
So over the years, we've come up with a method of assessing different types of award entrants and assigning them to different types of personas.
And what we've found is, depending on which persona you are, will depend on the likelihood of you winning or not.
What are the Awards Personas?
The personas are based on different characteristics that we see coming through in your award entry and that can be based on the language that's used, the story that's told, the methodology used, and the evidence or lack of it.
We've put together 10 personas that relate to all different types of award entries and people that I've seen entering awards.
Have a think about which persona you could be and whether it's making a difference to the way that you enter awards and your chances of winning. Then take the test to find out exactly which persona you are!
Awards Imposter
They range from everything from the awards Imposter, who, believe it or not, is the most popular awards persona because so many people feel like an imposter going into the award.
They think; I don't think I'm worth it. I don't think I can win. I think there'll be stronger contenders. I know there are bigger brands. I know there are businesses that have earned more.
Imposter syndrome can stop you doing all sorts of things, but in awards you only need to compete against the people who are entering at the same time as you. And the chances are there's not going to be a huge amount of them.
If you don't believe that you can win, then the judges aren't going to believe that you can win either.
Ostrich persona
The Ostrich persona just wants to hide their head in the sand.
They think; I know that awards could help me with my business, but I really don't want to get involved. I don't know what it takes. I'd just rather stay away. I’m quite shy.
But that's not going to help you to raise your awards profile. And again, it will shine through if you do ever decide to enter an award that your heart's not really quite in it.
Misfits, Bridesmaids and others
There are other personas as well, like the Misfit who's jumping around entering different awards categories, different awards and who don't really know what their strengths are and where they're going to fit – they keep missing out because actually, they're not entering the right competition.
Or perhaps you're the awards Bridesmaid; always in the finals and never really quite make it to the winning post.
But what we really want you to become is the Awards Athlete.
That's the persona that has the highest chance of winning when they enter an awards competition.
The awards athlete doesn't give up when they hit their first hurdle, they learn from it, and they keep training, and they keep on going until they get to that winning post.
They plan to win, they prepare to win, and therefore they do win.
