Benefits of Winning The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise

Every year on The Queen’s Birthday, the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise award winners are announced.

Each winner will have had their own motivation for entering; recognition for an innovative product or service, to differentiate themselves from their competitors, recognition for their exporting success or simply for the prestige.

No matter the motivation for entering, every winner comes away knowing they are one of the best businesses in the UK.

WINNERS PERKS

Not only do you receive an invitation to Buckingham Palace, the Lord Lieutenant of your County will visit your office as a representative of The Queen. The representative will award the company with a Grant of Appointment and commemorative crystal bowl with the winner’s emblem.

This is a really fantastic opportunity to get all of your employees, stakeholders, family and friends involved for a real celebration and to be part of the presentation ceremony. You can also invite local journalists and photographers to document the event and get some valuable news coverage and PR, letting everyone know of your success!

Queen_s_Award_Ceremony-0086_seafront-reception

For the five years following the win, all winners are granted the use of the official Queen’s Awards for Enterprise winners emblem. The emblem represents prestige, notable achievement and is recognised globally. It’s a fantastic asset to use on your website, email signature, marketing materials and packaging.

Businesses who enter and unfortunately don’t win can still find the experience of entering beneficial. Unsuccessful entrants receive feedback, providing targets to work towards and outlining where they may need to focus to be successful next time around. This feedback isn’t just beneficial for re-entering but is often sound business advice to take forward and improve.

GROWING SUCCESS

Winners of The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise have reported improvements across the business;

  • 77% of winners have reported increased commercial value for the business
  • 73% of winning businesses have seen employee engagement increase
  • 73% of winners benefited from additional press coverage in local, national and industry press
  • 57% of International Trade winners received increased recognition from overseas

Most importantly, 85% of winners have said winning The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise have met or exceeded their expectations.

Like most awards, it’s how you respond and utilise a win that can determine how much success you achieve off the back of the win.

An award like The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise needs to be shouted about. It is a huge achievement and is a fantastic tool to win new customers, clients, contracts, stakeholders and for recruitment. It is also a great statement to say to your existing contacts ‘The Queen has recognised us as one of the best businesses in the UK!’

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise

By Donna O’Toole

On the Queen’s 94th Birthday, luxury bathroom retailer supplier HiB was recognised as one of just 220 British businesses to win the coveted Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category.

From humble origins selling mirrors from his North London home in 1990, HiB Chairman, Warren Ginsberg spent almost 30 years growing a thriving family business whilst challenging the status quo of the bathroom industry. By creating innovative bathroom products to give customers more choices and benefits than ever before, HiB is at the forefront of bathroom design in the UK and worldwide today.

In 2014, after significant business growth and development, HiB became the first bathroom products manufacturer to embed Colour Temperature Changing (CTC) technology into bathroom mirrors, newly pioneering an entire sub-industry. From there they have gone on to further innovate, adding Bluetooth Technology and heated pads to keep mirrors crystal clear and steam free to meet the needs of the modern consumer’s gadget-loving, tech-driven, always-on lifestyle, allowing them to play music or even talk on the phone.

ROAD TO SUCCESS

Assessment

The Queen’s Awards are designed to recognise the outstanding achievements of British business in the fields of, Innovation, International Trade, Sustainable Development and Promoting Opportunity (through social mobility).

The eligibility criteria is stringent and there is a rigorous entry process. So before we support anyone to enter we run an assessment to determine whether the business is ready to win.

In Spring 2019, with HiB’s 30th year anniversary approaching, managing director Robert Ginsberg thought it would be wonderful to mark the company’s success by winning the most prestigious business award in the UK and when he told us their story, we knew from the very first assessment that they had what it takes to win a Queen’s Award.

After passing our assessment, we were confident HiB had a great chance of winning in the innovation category. So we got to work finding out every detail about the business and their industry-leading products.

Crafting the Nomination

We met the HiB team at their national distribution centre in Tamworth where we were hugely impressed with how the business is run and enjoyed the family feel that they have maintained despite their scale.

Inspire House Photo (002)

It was wonderful to hear of all the community and charity projects they get involved in too, like ‘Around the World in Different Ways’ where the whole team is fundraising for Alzheimer’s Research UK and the National Autistic Society. You can read more about this and support here.

After discovering so much about the business, we were able to support the team to carry on with their main business focus whilst we crafted their nomination, demonstrating and evidencing their business achievements to prove the many reasons why they deserved to be recognised as one of Britain’s best businesses.

THE ROYAL STAMP OF APPROVAL

We thoroughly enjoyed supporting HiB from entry in the summer, to shortlisting in the autumn, and finally winning in April 2020.

As winners, HiB will now be able to shout about their achievements by;
● Displaying the globally recognised winners logo for the next 5 years across their website, products, and communications
● Flying the official Queen’s Award flag at their UK Headquarters, Inspire House
● Maximising PR opportunities in regional, national and industry press
● Leveraging their win to increase sales and enhance customer relationships
● Being invited to a reception at Buckingham Palace
● Hosting an official event with the Lord Lieutenant who will present them with their award and commemorative glass trophy

We are so proud to have been able to support another fantastic, well-deserving British business to win. And at a time where the world is in a state of flux it has been a hugely positive message for HiB to bring to their customers, teams and partners – demonstrating that the UK is a place for strong family businesses to thrive in the future.

Robert Ginsberg, Managing Director said,

“Product development is at the heart of our business vision and our design teams continuously drive the company forward with new, inventive concepts to benefit the wider community. Across the HiB and Novum ranges, our mission has always been to provide mirrors, cabinets, lighting and ventilation solutions which combine stunning aesthetics with the very latest technology and our growing product collections are a clear demonstration of that vision.

“We inspire a strong company culture across our workforce, which is based upon our core values of excellence, teamwork, community and innovation. As a business we value the creativity and vision of all our employees, which helps us work towards a common sense of achievement. This has been particularly clear over the last few months.

“Despite the difficult times many of us are facing, it is heartening to know that we can share some positive news with our partners, suppliers, employees and wider community and celebrate this significant award, which is a huge achievement for everyone at HiB.”

HiB people

And we were delighted to know how much they enjoyed working with us too, with such lovely feedback:

We are delighted to have won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category and would highly recommend Donna’s services. Her professional advice and guidance was invaluable during the application process and we would like to thank her for all her efforts. With Donna’s help, we were able to put together a comprehensive submission for the esteemed award and we are thrilled with the results.” Steve Kaye, Marketing Director, HiB

Why Awards Should be Part of Your Marketing Strategy

Why Awards Should be Part of Your Marketing Strategy

Why Awards Should be Part of Your Marketing Strategy

Business Awards

By Donna O’Toole

From Start-ups and SMEs, to huge global organisations we all have and need a marketing strategy. And no matter your budget, awards should be included.

Awards can sometimes be overlooked when it comes to marketing. But an awards strategy can help to boost your business and brand awareness, all at a low cost with big impact.

A professional awards strategy will;

  • Help you choose the most valuable awards with the biggest return on investment
  • Help you decide the most relevant categories you are most likely to win
  • Help you manage and meet all your deadlines
  • Help you establish a workflow (for gathering vital evidence etc.)
  • Help you budget for the whole awards process (entry fees, ceremonies etc.)

So if you want to; enter awards you have the biggest chance of winning, raise your brand’s profile, recognise your team’s hard work, stop missing important industry awards, and put an end to submitting rushed last-minute losing entries…

You need an awards strategy! And if you’re not sure how to create one, we can help.

Here’s why awards should be part of your marketing strategy;

1) RECOGNITION

Whether you’re a winner, runner-up or a finalist, the third-party recognition you receive is invaluable. It will reinforce your marketing messages and raise your profile, so when you say you’re the best, you can prove that you really are!

Winning an award shows your existing customers you are trustworthy, reliable and a good business to spend their money with. And for new customers, being award-winning will give them a reason to choose you over their competitors.

Also, an award win, or finalist announcement will impress existing stakeholders and shareholders, and can be an effective tool to win over prospective investors.

2) ADDITIONAL PR COVERAGE

Becoming a finalist of awards with connections to local, national and industry press means you can benefit from FREE PR, saving you ££££s!

Awards such as The National Business Awards in 2019 partnered with The i, The Scotsman and The Yorkshire Post. Similarly, The Amazon Scale-Up Awards are organised by Business Leader Magazine. Both awards publish finalists and winners in articles that reach a huge readership.

Industry trade magazines often run their own awards programme and will publish you as a result of your participation – getting you valuable industry coverage.

3) LOW-COST LOW-RISK MARKETING

Marketing campaigns usually require a big budget. But entering awards is a relatively low-cost exercise that has a fast impact on your results.

Depending on the awards programme, entry fees can range from being free to a couple hundred pounds. By creating an awards strategy you can make decisions on which awards to enter based on your budget.

If you win, you have spent a small amount and achieved a huge result. If you are a finalist you have still gained valuable exposure. And if you don’t win this time, you will learn from the experience, and it won’t affect your bottom line.

4) BRAND AWARENESS

Awards can present some fantastic opportunities for networking, partnerships and sponsorships. All of which will increase your brand’s exposure and awareness in your chosen industries – which is a great way to find new customers and partners.

Award ceremonies are huge events attended by CEOs, business leaders and decision-makers.

If you want to grow in an industry you supply, getting yourself invited to an awards ceremony where your ideal customer will be is the perfect opportunity for exposure. You can network and create relationships with the brands you are interested in, either as clients or as collaborators.

Sponsoring and partnering with an awards programme will require a bigger budget, but if you choose the right event for you it can have a huge ROI. Again, having an awards strategy can help you decide the best opportunities for your business.

5) PROJECT MANAGEMENT

When you make awards part of your marketing strategy, an awards strategy will help you manage your time and the entry process.

We get so many enquiries from companies wanting to enter an important industry award where the deadline is as little as a week away! Usually because they have received a final deadline reminder and it was not part of their marketing strategy.

Depending on the length of the entry, the project you are entering and how many people are involved, you will need to plan in how much time is needed to gather the evidence, create the story and complete the entry.

With an awards strategy in place you can plan time for each step of the entry process; writing a first draft, editing, second draft, final edits, signoff and submission.

Planning time for all these steps will radically reduce stress and improve the quality of your entries, giving you a much higher chance of success.

INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE AWARDS WINNERS 2019

We were thrilled to attend and judge at the 2019 International Customer Experience Awards Finals held in Amsterdam.

Inspiring international organisations are recognised for their exceptional customer experience. SMEs, large global businesses and professionals from all industries compete to win.

If you’ve innovated, transformed or are leading your industry in CX these are one of the awards you need to win!

PRESENTATIONS TO THE JUDGES

The awards follow the same format as the UK Customer Experience Awards.

Finalists present to the judges during the daytime event before finding out the winners in the evening. So no need to wait months to find out if you’ve won.

Presentations are 15 minutes long with an additional 15 minute Q&A with the judges. The judges’ questions help to bag some last-minute points you may have missed in your presentation and could be the difference between Gold and Silver!

Our CEO, Donna O’Toole was part of the judging panel for Most Effective Customer Experience in Social Media category this year. She said,

“It was great to be a part of the international customer experience awards and to see some of the incredible customer experience transformations being made across the world! It’s great to meet the teams behind them and hear exactly how they have made a mark on their businesses and customers.”

“Judging the entries is always an interesting activity, and seeing the hard work of the entrants come to life in a face-to-face presentation is a real privilege. It’s an incredibly revealing process; there is nowhere to hide when it comes to the judge’s questions, but the best teams always shine bright in the end.”

Attendees were invited to watch the finalists present to the judges. A fantastic opportunity to gain insights into the current customer experience trends (and check out the competition).

Throughout the day the venue is a hub for networking, sharing a coffee and lunch with colleagues, and connecting with sponsors.
