The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise

By Donna O’Toole

On the Queen’s 94th Birthday, luxury bathroom retailer supplier HiB was recognised as one of just 220 British businesses to win the coveted Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category.

From humble origins selling mirrors from his North London home in 1990, HiB Chairman, Warren Ginsberg spent almost 30 years growing a thriving family business whilst challenging the status quo of the bathroom industry. By creating innovative bathroom products to give customers more choices and benefits than ever before, HiB is at the forefront of bathroom design in the UK and worldwide today.

In 2014, after significant business growth and development, HiB became the first bathroom products manufacturer to embed Colour Temperature Changing (CTC) technology into bathroom mirrors, newly pioneering an entire sub-industry. From there they have gone on to further innovate, adding Bluetooth Technology and heated pads to keep mirrors crystal clear and steam free to meet the needs of the modern consumer’s gadget-loving, tech-driven, always-on lifestyle, allowing them to play music or even talk on the phone.

ROAD TO SUCCESS

Assessment

The Queen’s Awards are designed to recognise the outstanding achievements of British business in the fields of, Innovation, International Trade, Sustainable Development and Promoting Opportunity (through social mobility).

The eligibility criteria is stringent and there is a rigorous entry process. So before we support anyone to enter we run an assessment to determine whether the business is ready to win.

In Spring 2019, with HiB’s 30th year anniversary approaching, managing director Robert Ginsberg thought it would be wonderful to mark the company’s success by winning the most prestigious business award in the UK and when he told us their story, we knew from the very first assessment that they had what it takes to win a Queen’s Award.

After passing our assessment, we were confident HiB had a great chance of winning in the innovation category. So we got to work finding out every detail about the business and their industry-leading products.

Crafting the Nomination

We met the HiB team at their national distribution centre in Tamworth where we were hugely impressed with how the business is run and enjoyed the family feel that they have maintained despite their scale.

It was wonderful to hear of all the community and charity projects they get involved in too, like ‘Around the World in Different Ways’ where the whole team is fundraising for Alzheimer’s Research UK and the National Autistic Society. You can read more about this and support here.

After discovering so much about the business, we were able to support the team to carry on with their main business focus whilst we crafted their nomination, demonstrating and evidencing their business achievements to prove the many reasons why they deserved to be recognised as one of Britain’s best businesses.

THE ROYAL STAMP OF APPROVAL

We thoroughly enjoyed supporting HiB from entry in the summer, to shortlisting in the autumn, and finally winning in April 2020.

As winners, HiB will now be able to shout about their achievements by;
● Displaying the globally recognised winners logo for the next 5 years across their website, products, and communications
● Flying the official Queen’s Award flag at their UK Headquarters, Inspire House
● Maximising PR opportunities in regional, national and industry press
● Leveraging their win to increase sales and enhance customer relationships
● Being invited to a reception at Buckingham Palace
● Hosting an official event with the Lord Lieutenant who will present them with their award and commemorative glass trophy

We are so proud to have been able to support another fantastic, well-deserving British business to win. And at a time where the world is in a state of flux it has been a hugely positive message for HiB to bring to their customers, teams and partners – demonstrating that the UK is a place for strong family businesses to thrive in the future.

Robert Ginsberg, Managing Director said,

“Product development is at the heart of our business vision and our design teams continuously drive the company forward with new, inventive concepts to benefit the wider community. Across the HiB and Novum ranges, our mission has always been to provide mirrors, cabinets, lighting and ventilation solutions which combine stunning aesthetics with the very latest technology and our growing product collections are a clear demonstration of that vision.

“We inspire a strong company culture across our workforce, which is based upon our core values of excellence, teamwork, community and innovation. As a business we value the creativity and vision of all our employees, which helps us work towards a common sense of achievement. This has been particularly clear over the last few months.

“Despite the difficult times many of us are facing, it is heartening to know that we can share some positive news with our partners, suppliers, employees and wider community and celebrate this significant award, which is a huge achievement for everyone at HiB.”

On The Queen’s 93rd birthday, 201 businesses were announced as the 2019 Queen’s Award for Enterprise winners. This year, three-quarters of the winners are SMEs, including businesses with less than 10 employees.

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise is the most prestigious award a UK business can win. Winners can use the official winners’ emblem for 5 years, this is recognised across the world as a mark of excellence.

Past winners of the International Trade category have seen up to 73% growth in their international sales and global recognition. This year InnovateUK have provided funding for 1 in 5 innovation winners.

There are only 4 categories to enter, each with a rigorous criteria, and are designed to highlight the very best UK businesses. This year there are;

  • 129 International Trade winners
  • 61 Innovation winners
  • 6 Sustainable Development winners
  • 5 Promoting Opportunity winners

Winners Benefits

Winners are invited to a Royal reception at Buckingham Palace alongside all the other winners from all 4 categories, which is a fantastic PR and networking opportunity.

As mentioned, winners receive an emblem they can use on all marketing materials, products, and websites. Winners are also allowed to fly The Queen’s Award flag at their main office.

In addition, winners will be awarded a Crystal trophy and a Grant of Appointment by one of The Queen’s representatives, usually the Lord Lieutenant of the County they are based. Again, a great PR opportunity, and celebration to be shared with employees and shareholders.

Winning can open many doors for your business, and provide previously unattainable opportunities.

Is Your Award Entry Irresistible?

Is Your Award Entry Irresistible?

Is Your Award Entry Irresistible?

Business Awards

By Donna O’Toole

Is your award entry irresistible?

I recently attended an excellent training day led by Shine. The similarities in our industries are clear, whether bidding for high-value commercial contracts worth millions or even billions of pounds  or aiming to win high-level industry awards, the passion we put into making sure our clients win is palpable.

During the day I was inspired by a discussion around ‘the seduction of sales’. The theory being that no matter what we are selling, be that our product, our services, or even ourselves via our CV, we need to ‘seduce’ the reader/judge/panel/decision-maker into choosing our bid, or in our case, our award entry.

This struck me for two key reasons.

  1. Because I am quite bored of reading advice that your award entry should be ‘compelling’ – in this highly competitive world where everyone is striving to be the best, I wonder if ‘compelling’ is no longer enough. Your award entry needs to be irresistible.
  2. Because too often I believe businesses and people are ‘seduced’ into entering awards that just won’t work for them in delivering either success or value. There should be a strategy behind your awards initiatives if you really want to create sustainable success.

Now I’m a true advocate of putting values at the front of any pitch. And I believe that a values-led approach, backed up by undeniable data and substantial evidence, will allow you to deliver your award entry or presentation with the passion you need to truly ‘seduce’ your audience into choosing your pitch.

So I was delighted to find that my takeaways for the day met with my own intuitions on how best to approach a winning pitch. And I came away proud of the passion that we put into every brand story we tell, every awards journey we make, and every positive awards result we are behind.
If you’re thinking about whether your brand story could be picked by a panel of judges ask yourself this; if I was the judge of this award, would I find this entry truly irresistible?

How To Win The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise

How To Win The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise

How To Win The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise

Business Awards

By Donna O’Toole

How to get your name on the The Queen’s Awards winning list

In 2016 a staggering 254 Queen’s Awards for Enterprise were won by businesses across the following categories:

  • International Trade — 150
  • Innovation — 92
  • Sustainable Development -7
  • Enterprise Promotion (the Queen’s Awards for individuals supporting others in enterprise) — 5

Why so many awards? And how did I achieve such a high success rate?

Well the Queen’s Awards run a rigorous competition, with strict criteria for entry and only the few categories mentioned above, but they don’t cap the amount of winners — so if you have the right profile, the right story and the right evidence, you could win an award!

Winning a Queen’s Award can be a game-changing experience for you. It supports you to grow your business profile, raises your business and all your employees to the dizzy heights of being recognised by Royalty, and positions you as the best in the UK. And what customer, partner or investor would choose a company without a Queen’s Award over a company with a Queen’s Award?

A popular question I am asked is ‘can I win more than one award?’. The answer is most certainly ‘yes’! In 2016 there were many double-winners like Inciner8 who won across two categories, and even one winner, JCB, who won 3 awards across their group — INCREDIBLE!

The Queen’s Awards are open for entry from May until early September — which is a shorter entry period than previously. On average (and ideally) it takes at least a month to prepare your entry to a winning standard — and that’s when you know what you are doing!

So don’t delay, give me a call today and I can help you find out whether you really have the key indicators for success and help you tell your winning story.

I direct and write winning award entries all year long, but I must confess, I really do like my clients to win a big competition, and The Queen’s Awards have become my favourite awards in the world to win with my clients because of the positive impact they create.

To find out if you have the potential to win a Queen’s Award for Innovation, International Trade or Sustainable Development contact me and I’ll tell you the winning formula.

I know how much winning the Queen’s Awards can do for your business, and I like to keep my success rates high, so you know that if we work together it is because I genuinely think you could win.

Give me a try and I will give you the best value and the best service in the UK. Fact.
